From Orality to Literacy: The Scripturalization of Alevi Religious Knowledge, 1736–1826

Özkan Karabulut is a PhD candidate in the History and Middle Eastern Studies program at Harvard University. He holds a BA in History from Middle East Technical University and an MA in History from Sabancı University.

His research focuses on the reading and writing practices of the Kızılbash-Alevi and Bektashi communities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His dissertation investigates the transmission of Alevi religious knowledge through the Alevi mystical poetry written in oblong notebooks, known as Cönk. During his fellowship at ANAMED, he will be conducting research in various manuscript libraries and private archives for his dissertation.
