The Byzantine Icon in Relief

Elisa Galardi is a PhD candidate in Byzantine Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Her PhD project is titled “The Relief Icon in Byzantium” and reconsiders the place of the raised form in medieval Orthodox Christianity. Galardi’s analysis encompasses relief icons across materials and size, and engages primarily with questions of materiality, phenomenology, and scale to unravel the complexity of the relief image in its two- and three-dimensional qualities.
Before joining Penn’s graduate program, Galardi earned a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Verona, and MAs from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the Courtauld Institute of Art. In 2021-2022 she was the M. Alison Frantz fellow at the Gennadius Library in Athens, Greece.
