The Emperor John II Komnenos (1118–1143) has been overshadowed by both his father Alexios I and his son Manuel I. Written sources have not left us much evidence regarding his reign, although authors agree that he was an excellent emperor. However, the period witnessed territorial expansion in Asia Minor as well as the construction of the most important monastic complex of twelfth-century Constantinople. What else do we know about John’s rule and its period? This volume opens up new perspectives on John’s reign and clearly demonstrates that many innovations generally attributed to the genius of Manuel Komnenos had already been fostered during the reign of the second great Komnenos. Byzantine Head Reliquaries and Their Perception in the West after 1204: A Case Study of the Reliquary of St. Anastasios the Persian in Aachen and Related Objects

This study centers around Byzantine head relics and their receptacles. The first part discusses the so-called Reliquary of St. Anastasios the Persian, a silverwork in the shape of a centralized, domed church that was probably made in Antioch, but was later housed in Aachen Cathedral. The object is commonly considered a Byzantine vessel for the Eucharist that was later reworked to become a reliquary for the head of St. Anastasios in its new Western context. This study closely examines the life and cult of this particular saint in Byzantium and Aachen by considering the object’s typology and contextualizing relations between Antioch and Constantinople in the late 10th century that have been largely overlooked, shedding light on the handling of sacred objects and confiscation measures under Basil II. The second part of the study concerns the veneration of Byzantine head relics in Constantinople and, more specifically, head relics that were transferred to the West in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade. A discussion of Latin, post-1204 sources which affected medieval and modern perceptions of Byzantine relic veneration counters a bias against Byzantine sacred goldsmith work discernable in scholarship of the mid-20th century. Together with appendices on the anatomical nomenclature of the human skull, skull-chalices, and selected sacred objects made of precious metal related to relic veneration and the Eucharist, this study aims to reconstruct head reliquary types. It also seeks to refute the claim in art history that simple caskets that can easily be opened were commonly used as reliquaries of Byzantine body relics.

While European eclecticism is examined as a critical and experimental moment in western art history, little research has been conducted to provide an intellectual depth of field to the historicist pursuits of late Ottoman architects as they maneuvered through the nineteenth century’s vast inventory of available styles and embarked on a revivalist/Orientalist program they identified as the ’Ottoman Renaissance.’ Ahmet A. Ersoy’s book examines the complex historicist discourse underlying this belated ’renaissance’ through a close reading of a text conceived as the movement’s canonizing manifesto: the Usul-i Mi’mari-i ’Osmani [The Fundamentals of Ottoman Architecture] (Istanbul, 1873). In its translocal, cross-disciplinary scope, Ersoy’s work explores the creative ways in which the Ottoman authors straddled the art-historical mainstream and their new, self-orientalizing aesthetics of locality. The study reveals how Orientalism was embraced by its very objects, the self-styled ’Orientals’ of the modern world, as a marker of authenticity, and a strategically located aesthetic tool to project universally recognizable images of cultural difference. Rejecting the lesser, subsidiary status ascribed to non-western Orientalisms, Ersoy’s work contributes to recent, post-Saidian directions in the study of cultural representation that resituate the field of Orientalism beyond its polaristic core, recognizing its cross-cultural potential as a polyvalent discourse.

Between Islam and Byzantium provides the first complete analysis of the development of the visual expression of medieval Armenian rulership during the years 884-1045 CE. During this period, the Armenian rulers had loosened the ties that subjected them to the Arab caliphate, but by its end the Byzantine empire had instead become dominant in the region. The influences exerted by these external, opposing powers are a major theme in this book. Lynn Jones re-contextualizes the existing royal art and architecture by integrating analyses of contemporary accounts of ceremonial and royal deeds with fresh examinations of the surviving monuments, of which the church at Aght`amar, with its famous carvings, is the prime example. Setting the art and architecture of the period more clearly in its original context, the author reveals the messages these buildings, sculptures and manuscripts were intended to convey by those who created and viewed them. This study provides a new perspective on the complex interactions between a broad range of nationalities, ethnicities and religions, shedding fresh light on the nature of medieval identity. It adds to a growing literature on the eastern neighbours of Byzantium, and opens up new issues on the relationship between the Byzantine empire and the Islamic caliphate in the medieval period.

This wide-ranging book is an intellectual history of how informed readers read their Bibles over the past four hundred years, from the first translations in the sixteenth century to the emergence of fundamentalism in the twentieth century. In an astonishing display of erudition, David Katz recreates the response of readers from different eras by examining the “horizon of expectations” that provided the lens through which they read. In the Renaissance, says Katz, learned men rushed to apply the tools of textual analysis to the Testaments, fully confident that God’s Word would open up and reveal shades of further truth. During the English Civil War, there was a symbiotic relationship between politics and religion, as the practical application of the biblical message was hammered out. Science – Newtonian and Darwinian, as well as the emerging disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, and geology – also had a great impact on how the Bible was received. The rise of the novel and the development of a concept of authorial copyright were other factors that altered readers’ experience. Katz discusses all of these and more, concluding with the growth of fundamentalism in America, which brought biblical interpretation back to the Lutheran certainty of a demonstrable authority.

The Hemmaberg, in the south-east of Austria, saw in late antiquity the development of the largest early- Christian centre of pilgrimage in the Alps. The findings at this location are used as the basis in the present study for a discussion of the general characteristics of the material culture of late antiquity in the eastern Alps from the 4th to the 7th century.

The Forgotten Kingdom offers a comparative look at the history of archaeology, archaeological photography and the community landscape from the early twentieth to twenty-first centuries by presenting a selection of photographs from the excavations conducted at Tell Atchana, ancient Alalakh, both in the 1930-40s and the present day. The site is located along the major branch of the Orontes River in the Amuq Valley of Hatay, near present-day Antakya in southern Türkiye. It is the largest Middle and Late Bronze Age settlement in the region and was the capital of the Kingdom of Mukish in the second millennium BC.

Die vorliegende Publikation stellt die leicht veränderte und aktualisierte Form der Dissertation des Autors dar, die im April 2001 an der Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät in Wien angenommen wurde. Sie befasst sich mit dem Thema königlicher Jagden, wobei sie die verschiedenartigen Bedeutungsebenen und Inhalte, welche die Jagd des Herrschers innerhalb der antiken Monarchien aufweisen konnte, zu analysieren sucht – in erster Linie werden Fragen nach der generellen Tragweite der Jagd innerhalb der Ideologie der entsprechenden Herrscherhäuser gestellt. So bilden beispielsweise Untersuchungen der Rolle, die der Religion im Zusammenhang mit der Jagd zukam, der tieferen Bedeutung bestimmter Jagdgesetze sowie der Funktion der Jagd als Element der Herrschaftslegitimation wesentliche Schwerpunkte.
Der topographische und chronologische Schwerpunkt der Arbeit wird von den Monarchien des Vorderen Orients und Griechenlands vom 6. bis zum Ende des 4. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. gebildet. Auf das Kapitel über die Jagd des Herrschers im Vorderen Orient (in vor-achämenidischer Zeit sowie im Achämenidenreich) folgt jeweils ein ein Kapitel über die Jagd im Königshaus der Argeaden vor Alexander dem Großen sowie während dessen Herrschaft. Ein weiterer Abschnitt befasst sich mit der Jagd der Diadochen. Ein eigenes Kapitel behandelt die Aussage, die mit der königlichen Jagd auf dem Fresko an der Fassade des sog. Philippsgrabes in Vergina verbunden ist. Der Band wird durch eine Zusammenfassung, einen Anhang mit Indices der Quellen, der Eigennamen und geographischen Begriffe sowie durch einen Tafelteil beschlossen.
