Prepared by ANAMED and offered thanks to Koç University Online Programs, ENVARCH101 and ENVARCH101TR (available both in English and Turkish) are designed to introduce participants to environmental archaeology broadly, including a survey of research questions and methods, and to explore three important subfields in-depth: archaeobotany, zooarchaeology and newly added bioarchaeology.

In addition to previous years and recently added bioarchaeology section, ANAMED is planning to offer a 3 days (12-13-14 September 2022) hands-on training at ANAMED, to several participants, who successfully complete the online program and got good points from the mini exam.

Requirements

Online Program
The online program is open to undergraduates and graduates from archaeology, history and art history, who has excavation experience. Researchers working on Anatolia will be prioritized. Please be aware that this is an introductory level online program.

Hands-on Training
The participants should complete the online program successfully and get good grades from the mini exam, which will be shared after the completion of the online program by ANAMED.

Classes & Activities

Online Program
Both programs will be available to you for almost a month, and you are free to complete the lessons according to your own pace. The program can be followed at any time, day, and place via remote access. All you need to have is your computer, an internet connection, and your account information.

The program consists of 4 sections and 17 modules in total. Each module is approximately 20–25 minutes long, and at the end of each module you are asked to answer multiple-choice quiz questions.

Hands-on Training
This in person training will last 3 days (12-13-14 September 2022) and consist of hands-on practical instruction by Benjamin Irvine and Ceren Çilingir on bioarchaeology and archaeobotany. More details TBA.

Materials

Online Program
All online program materials are digital and will be provided by ANAMED through the online program platform. It is not possible to download presentations or videos. They are available only on the platform during the program dates. Please do not forget to take notes. Additionally, please note that all materials are copyrighted and recording the videos is not permitted.

Hands-on Training
All training materials will pe provided by ANAMED.

Instructors

Müge Ergun (2018-2020 ANAMED Environmental Archaeology Fellow)

Müge Ergun is an archaeologist and archaeobotanist who holds a Ph.D. from Istanbul University’s Department of Prehistory and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University Doctoral School of Archaeology (co-tutelle, 2016), and an M.A. from Istanbul University’s Department of Prehistory (2009). Her research focuses on people-plant interactions, plant-based activities in daily and seasonal routines, and their effects on the economic and socio-cultural lives of communities, with a special interest in the beginnings of agriculture and the domestication process in Southwest Asia. She has recently been working on projects focusing on early Neolithic communities from Central Anatolia (Aşıklı Höyük and Balıklı) and North Cyprus (Tatlısu- Çiftlikdüzü (Akanthou-Arkosykos)).

Hannah Lau (2018-2020 ANAMED Environmental Archaeology Fellow)

Hannah Lau is an anthropological archaeologist whose research uses zooarchaeological data to examine the relationship between ancient peoples’ animal management practices, the environment, and sociopolitical complexity. She received her Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of California, Los Angeles (2016) where her work documented social and economic cooperation and coordination in agropastoral production among inhabitants at the Halaf period site of Domuztepe (ca. 6000–5450 BCE) in southeastern Türkiye. Dr. Lau has fieldwork experience at a number of sites in the Near East and South Caucasus. In addition to her work in Türkiye, she has worked in Azerbaijan since 2009 in the southeastern province of Lerik and in the Autonomous Republic of Naxçıvan.

Benjamin Irvine (2020-2022 DAI-ANAMED Environmental Archaeology Project Fellow)

Benjamin Irvine is a bioarchaeologist who specialises in utilising osteological, archaeological, and stable isotope analyses to examine human-environment interactions, dietary habits, subsistence practices, agricultural strategies, and mobility patterns of populations in ancient Anatolia and neighbouring regions. He is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow on the DAI-ANAMED joint research project “Humidity & Society: 8,500 Years of Climate History in Western Anatolia”, as well as an Honorary Research Fellow of the BIAA.

Ceren Çilingir  (2020-2023 DAI-ANAMED Environmental Archaeology Project Fellow)

Ceren Çilingir is an archaeobotanist and a PhD student in the Prehistory Department at Istanbul University. She holds a MSc degree from Middle East Technical University, Settlement Archaeology Program and an undergraduate degree from Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, Archaeology department. In her dissertation, she aims to understand the food economy through agricultural technologies, traditional farming methods, and the use of plants that are cultivated from Tepecik-Çiftlik (6300–7000 BC). In this direction, she has been conducting ethnoarchaeological field studies since 2010, where she documents the traditional crop processing methods still used in the district of Niğde-Çiftlik and its surrounding villages. Her research interests include ethnoarchaeological interpretations of cultivation and food preparation, plant-based subsistence strategies and human-plant interactions in the prehistoric communities of Near East.

Certificates

Online Program
Koç University will issue participation certificates to all students who successfully complete the online program (you need to receive above 70 the final exam). Your certificate will be prepared in the program language you selected (Turkish or English).

Hands-on Training
ANAMED will issue participation certificates to all students who get the chance to participate and complete the hands-on training.

Fees

Online Program
There are no fees for participation in this online program.

Hands-on Training
There are no fees for participation in the hands-on training too. Transportation (1 economy class round trip) to several participants; accommodation and lunch to all participants will be provided by ANAMED. There will be limited spaces.

  • How many times will the program be offered online?
    Online program periods will be announced from the website and social media accounts of ANAMED.
  • Can I register again if I leave the program without completing it or if I cannot finish on time?
    Unfortunately, participants who do not successfully complete the program during the program dates will be unable to participate in future offerings of the Environmental Archaeology Online Program.
