There are many ways one can get from the Istanbul Airport to the Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in Beyoğlu (at the junction of İstiklal Caddesi and Nur-i Ziya Sokak). In order of fastest to slowest speeds, the routes include taxis, shuttle buses, and city buses.
>>TAXI
If you take a taxi (around 250–300 TL and ~45 minutes, depending on traffic), ask the driver to take you to “Odakule in Beyoğlu, Taksim”. Ask to be dropped on Meşrutiyet Caddesi, the street between the TRT Otoparkı and Odakule, just next to the Pera Museum. From there, walk through the corridor to İstiklal Caddesi. ANAMED is located right next to the Ziraat Bank to the left and across the street from Odakule (see Fig. 1 for the walking route). If you are inclined towards Google Maps, see here for convenience: https://goo.gl/maps/yP5KwhRk8QA2

>> HAVAİST SHUTTLE BUS – Every half hour
If you take a HAVAİST shuttle bus (52 TL (luggage included) and ~95 minutes, depending on traffic), look for the “HAVAİST” buses at the exit of the airport. They run 24/7 for Beyoğlu/Taksim (see Fig. 2 for the timetable) and you can put your luggage in the undercarriage. Only a public transportation card (İstanbulKart) can be used to pay for travel on HAVAİST shuttle buses (see below for getting an İstanbulKart). The best place to get off is the last stop in front of the Point Hotel, just past Taksim Square (the “Havaist Taksim” stop). From there, you have two options. You can either take a taxi or walk. If you prefer to take a taxi, ask the driver to take you to “Odakule in Beyoğlu, Taksim”. If you prefer to walk, however, go to Taksim Square, and walk down İstiklal Street until you see the ANAMED building. >> CITY BUS – Every 15 minutes
One can also use city buses, which operate 24/7, but we discourage new ANAMED visitors from doing so. On the positive side, it may be slightly less expensive than other methods. On the negative side, it might be crowded and rather circuitous, and it may require you to walk and use staircases if elevators or escalators are out of order (with İstanbulKart the average cost is 8 TL/person/ride; see below for how to get an İstanbulKart). If you prefer city buses, however, you should take İST-19, which will take you from Istanbul Airport to Abdülhak Hamit Street, Taksim, in 100 minutes. Click here for the timetable of İST-19. The best place to get off is the last stop in front of the Point Hotel, just past Taksim Square. From there, you have two options. You can either take a taxi or walk. If you prefer to take a taxi, ask the driver to take you to “Odakule in Beyoğlu, Taksim”. GETTING TO ANAMED FROM SABİHA GÖKÇEN AIRPORT (SAW) (Asian Side):
The Sabiha Gökçen Airport is located on the Asian side of Istanbul (see Fig. 3).
>> TAXI
Unless money and time are no concern, we discourage taking taxis from Sabiha Gökçen Airport. The ride to Beyoğlu may take more than an hour and may cost more than 300 TL, depending on traffic and route.
>> HAVABÜS SHUTTLE BUS – Every half hour
If you take a Havabüs shuttle bus (around 50 TL (luggage included) and ~90 minutes, depending on traffic), look for the “Havabüs” buses at the exit of the airport. They leave every 30 minutes for Beyoğlu/Taksim between 04:00 and 01:00 and you can put your luggage in the undercarriage. The best place to get off is the last stop in front of the Point Hotel, just past Taksim Square. From there you can take a taxi or walk down Meşrutiyet Caddesi past the British Consulate and reach Odakule. From there, walk through the corridor to İstiklal Cd. ANAMED is located right next to the Ziraat Bankası to the left and across the street from Odakule (see Fig. 1 for the walking route). Click here for the timetable of HAVABÜS shuttle buses. The options are not good, and we discourage them for all new ANAMED visitors.
How to Get an İstanbulKart:
İstanbulKart (Istanbul Card) is in essence an all-round public transportation boarding pass. It is worth getting one if you plan to use public transportation multiple times during your stay in Istanbul (which you likely will). There are quite a few advantages to getting an İstanbulKart versus using tokens or a ticket each time you use public transportation. This single card enables you to pay for multiple types of transportation: the metro, buses, ferries, funiculars, and tramways (even the nostalgic one running along İstiklal Caddesi). Moreover, most of these transportation types no longer accept cash payments, so you’ll have to buy some kind of token or ticket before boarding anyway. The İstanbulKart is a prepaid and rechargeable card. This means you don’t have to stand in line (and maybe miss the bus or tram) to get a valid boarding pass each time you plan to make use of public transportation. Uploading credits can be done at designated machines found at most metro and tram stations.
The easiest way to get the İstanbulKart is at major transit stops such as the airport, Sultanahmet, and Eminönü. To buy an İstanbulKart, you need to pay a non-refundable 25 TL fee (for the actual card and the service), and of course an amount of your choice to load onto the card.
